U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has activated online filing for Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, for certain employment-based applicants and their representatives. The change, confirmed on USCIS’s official Forms Available to File Online page, lets eligible applicants already in the United States submit their green card application through the myUSCIS portal instead of mailing a paper packet to a USCIS lockbox.
Form I-485 is the core application used by eligible individuals in the U.S. to apply for lawful permanent resident status. USCIS says it is “in the process of developing the online filing capability for other applicant types,” meaning family-based and other categories currently remain paper-only.

Online filing is expected to generate faster digital receipts, reduce data-entry and mailroom errors, and give employers and applicants quicker confirmation that a case is on file. For workers relying on pending I-485s to support employment authorization under portability rules, a faster receipt can matter for timing.
That said, the system is new. Applicants should still keep every original document safe, double-check file size and format requirements before uploading, and be prepared to fall back on paper filing if the case type or circumstances require it.

- Confirm your eligibility category actually qualifies for online filing before relying on the portal, check the current USCIS Form I-485 page for the latest status.
- Schedule the civil surgeon exam early and do not open the sealed I-693 envelope unless you are filing online.
- Keep the original I-693 and its envelope in a safe place for the entire life of the case, even after uploading a copy.
- Review your full supporting-document checklist before submission to avoid missing or inconsistent evidence, a common cause of delays.
